Final reflection for this capstone, I enjoyed every aspect of the working progress. Not only did I able to draw 2D pixel art again after haven't touch pixel art after first year game project of 2D Platformer. After knowing the importance of time management, especially in this project I am in charge of all the 2D pixel assets, tile maps and animations. I drew the assets almost everyday, making sure the whole environment is polished. Before, we did discussed to use some preset if is too much workload for me, but at the end I decided to draw everything, the furnitures, character sprites, assets etc. Since the pixel style can vary significantly depending on the presets used, it’s important to customize them carefully.
I also learned a new feature in Unity, it enhance the atmosphere into a next level. I am grateful I researched and discovered "Global Volume" before handing in the final gameplay. With a simplistic pixel style, to increase the mood with fantasy and horror vibe, the use of lighting is a very important role. It creates depth from the flat 2D art to something more immersive and appealing. It gives the clinic a fantasy, dreamy, bubbly vibe, as for Nina the first patient levels, the environment looks more moody and scarier now everytime you want deeper down the attic. Therefore, Global Volume helps improving the whole atmosphere for the environment.
The thing that it took me the longest time to finish was, putting all the animations sprites into Unity Animator, because of the ambitious mindset of me, I wanted to animate not only protagonist, I also wanted to animate the patients from before, after resolve their truama appearance and enemies. Plus, the last few steps are always the most paintful part, even though I get a hang of it after finish animating the first half of the patients.
Overall I enjoyed this group project for the fullest. Despite the fact that we can only show until the first patient level environment. It was because we didn't know our game time length reached to around more than 15 mins already, so we can only show this much creations as a Demo for now, athough we almost finish setting up the second patients level. But hopefully after graduation, we will finish the remaining levels and acturally show the complete backstory.
